Seriously… you guys know me by now. I am not the type of person who sits around reading stuff from the 1500s for fun. I used to think Shakespeare was just code for “boring required reading.” But I finally broke down and read the play Romeo and Juliet, and you know what? I am genuinely reeling. It is nothing like the “sweet” movies you’ve seen! 😭
First of all, I didn’t even realize this was originally a play meant to be performed. 🎭 It was written to be seen on a stage with a loud, emotional crowd, which makes sense because the drama is next level. I mean, the story starts with Romeo literally crying over some girl named Rosaline… he was so “heartbroken” until he saw Juliet five minutes later. Talk about dramatic actor energy!! 😂
Then you have the famous balcony scene, which is honestly so intense because they’re whispering about marriage while their families are probably outside dreaming of killing each other. But things go south FAST. I’m talking about the brutal street fight where Mercutio and Tybalt die. When Mercutio curses both families with his last breath, it is the exact moment the comedy dies and the nightmare begins. ⚔️
What really stressed me out was the potion plan. Juliet literally fakes her own death just to escape her parents! It was such a huge gamble!! But the timing was just cruel. Because of one delayed letter, Romeo thinks she’s actually gone. Watching him go to her tomb, while she’s just about to wake up, is the most infuriating thing ever. It’s like watching a movie where you’re screaming at the screen “STAY ALIVE FOR TWO MORE MINUTES!!” 💔
This whole story happens in less than five days, which is just pure madness. It’s a brutal warning about how the pride and blind hatred of the older generation can absolutely trash the lives of the youth. If you’ve been skipping this because it’s a “classic,” you are seriously missing out. It’s messy, it’s fast-paced, and it will break your heart into a million pieces. Go read it (or better yet, find a performance!) and tell me in the comments—was it destiny or just a series of really bad decisions? ✨🏃💨
